  Posted on August 24, 2017

Ontario OH – The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging Inc. is proud to announce Peggy Briggs has been selected as the 2017 Outstanding Senior Citizen for Ashland County. She and eight other recipients were honored on Thursday, August 24 at a ceremony hosted at Hawkins Corner.

Briggs was born in Ashland, OH. She worked for Dr. Steury, a dentist in Ashland, for 10 years and after her marriage to Larry Briggs, served as a secretary to the Director of the Animal Science Department at the University of Florida for 12 and half years.

Since her return to Ashland after retirement, Briggs has served as an active volunteer for the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP).

“Peggy has volunteered hundreds of hours serving the less fortunate of Ashland County at the Associated Food Bank,” said COAD-RSVP of Mid-Ohio coordinator Jack Schumaker. “Many Ashland County families rely on the Food Bank, and it takes special people like Peggy who care about the well-being of people in their communities to make sure the needs of all the people in their community are met.”

Briggs has also volunteered at the Red Cross and Crystal Care Nursing Facility for two and a half years.

Each year the Area Agency on Aging honors senior citizens who are making a difference in their communities and present a positive image of aging.

There is one award recipient for each county in the Agency’s service area (Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, and Wyandot.)

Awardees must first be nominated by an individual or organization involved with seniors. They are then selected by the Agency based on the impact of their contributions and accomplishments within the community made after reaching age 60.

Additionally, the following residents of Ashland County received the 2017 Safe Driver Award at the ceremony: Cindy Baughman, Allen Black, Ken Bunch, John Chorpening, Tassie Cole, Doug Fike, Ruby Murphy, Jim Norris, Doug Pelton, Vic Staley, Maria Sulter and Paul Uebel.
