Area Agency on Aging selects Sue Payne as 2018 Outstanding Senior Citizen for Knox County

  Posted on August 23, 2018

The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging Inc. is proud to announce Sue Payne has been selected as the 2018 Outstanding Senior Citizen for Knox County. She and eight other recipients were honored on Thursday, Aug. 23 at a ceremony hosted at Hawkins Corner.

Payne was nominated by Krista Swan from The Station Break Senior Center. In her nomination she shared that Payne was raised in Mount Vernon and learned to sew in 4-H as a child.

As a young wife and mother, she started quilting and learned much by watching Amish ladies at shops in Berlin, Ohio. Payne also took lessons at Jordan’s Quilt Shop in Mount Vernon. She helped start a ladies’ quilting group at The Station Break Senior Center. Their hand-stitched quilts have won either Best of Show or First Place every year at the Knox County Fair.

Sue has made lap quilts for residents of a veterans home in Ohio, as well as quilted and crocheted baby blankets for Care Net.  In addition to sewing, Payne volunteered at stock auctions at the fair and was 4-H project judge for many years as well as a Girl Scout leader in Mount Vernon from 1975-1992.

“I’ve gotten to meet a lot of interesting and new people in my volunteer work,” said Payne during the ceremony. “And to me, those memories are good memories for me.”

She also received commendations from the Knox County Commissioners.

Each year the Area Agency on Aging honors senior citizens who are making a difference in their communities and present a positive image of aging.

There is one award recipient for each county in the Agency’s service area (Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, and Wyandot.)

Awardees must first be nominated by an individual or organization involved with seniors. They are then selected by the Agency based on the impact of their contributions and accomplishments within the community made after reaching age 60.
