Ontario OH – The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging Inc. is proud to announce Virginia Hammontree has been selected as the 2017 Outstanding Senior Citizen for Crawford County. She and eight other recipients were honored on Thursday, August 24 at a ceremony hosted at Hawkins Corner.
On the outside looking in, it seemed that Hammontree, who will celebrate her 46-year anniversary with her husband Pat in September, had always placed her husband’s work and her two daughters’ church and school activities above her own ambitions; however, when her husband asked what she would “really like to do” instead of serving those around her, she explained that she was already living her dream: being useful and helping others.
Hammontree values the former motto of the Rotary Club: Service above Self and exhibits this through her participation in the following:
Rotary Club of Bucyrus—Past President, Current Assistant Governor, Co-Chair of Auction-fest raising $500,000 since 2002 for local partners and projects
Co-Chair of Bucyrus Christmas parade
Board member and treasurer of Contact, a 24-hour helpline
Board member and treasurer for Bucyrus tourism
Board member, treasurer, buyer, and packer for Bucyrus Backpack Program supplying 125-150 children with needed weekend meals during the school year
Rotary Club Board Member
Teacher for six kindergarten Junior Achievement classes for 18 years
Delivers meals three days a week for Council on Aging
Bucyrus Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year for 2013
Each year the Area Agency on Aging honors senior citizens who are making a difference in their communities and present a positive image of aging.
There is one award recipient for each county in the Agency’s service area (Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, and Wyandot.)
Awardees must first be nominated by an individual or organization involved with seniors. They are then selected by the Agency based on the impact of their contributions and accomplishments within the community made after reaching age 60.
Additionally, the following residents of Crawford County received the 2017 Safe Driver Award at the ceremony: Mike Browning, Sam Eichhorn, Richard Gearhart, Don Heydinger, Don Neumann, Dave Reffley, Kevin Ruth, Chuck Siefert, Jack Starcher, Mike Tighe.
