As the aging population grows, accessible transportation becomes essential for older adults to age in place and maintain their quality of life, helping to mitigate the significant challenges they face.
Mobility management helps older adults and individuals with disabilities find and coordinate transportation options, ensuring they can safely and easily get to essential places like medical appointments, employment, and education while also finding solutions when there are gaps in transportation needs. It enhances mobility access by raising awareness and understanding of transportation needs.
CarFit is a free, educational vehicle-fitting program designed to help drivers — especially older adults — make sure their personal vehicles “fit” them safely and comfortably. It was developed through a national collaboration between organizations, including AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, and uses a simple process to review how well a driver and their vehicle work together.
At a typical CarFit check event, trained volunteers use a 12-point checklist to assess items like seat position, mirror settings, steering wheel distance, head restraint height, pedal reach, and seat belt fit. Drivers then receive recommended adjustments, adaptations, and safety information tailored to their vehicle and body.
CarFit improves safety by ensuring the driver is properly positioned and adjusted within the vehicle, helping them use the vehicle’s safety features more effectively and increasing comfort and control. Key ways this enhances safety include:
• Better visibility: Adjusting seats and mirrors helps drivers see clearly over the dashboard and around the vehicle, reducing blind spots and improving awareness.
• Safer reaction and control: Proper pedal reach and comfortable positioning can reduce fatigue and ensure quicker, more controlled responses to traffic situations.
• Improved use of safety features: Ensuring adequate space between the driver and the steering-wheel airbag and proper seat belt fit increases protection in the event of a crash.
• Reduced injury risk: When the driver’s body is in the best possible position, the vehicle’s built-in safety systems (airbags, belts, head restraints) are more effective at protecting occupants during a collision.
Because the program also includes education and discussion on driver safety and mobility, participants often leave more aware of how adjustments and features can help keep them safer on the road.
